The Culminating Portfolio
Dallastown's Culminating Project

The following information applies to current seniors (2013 graduates) only.

A Culminating Project must be completed successfully by each student who wishes to graduate from Dallastown Area High School.  This is a Pennsylvania state-mandated requirement.  The wording of the requirement may be found in Section 4.24, "High School Graduation Requirements," in the Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations, which is worded as follows:

            (a)  Each school district (including charter schools) shall specify
requirements for graduation in the strategic plan under 4.13
(relating to strategic planning).  Requirements shall include
course completion and grades, completion of culminating
project and results of local assessments aligned with the
                  academic standards.
… The purpose of the culminating project is to assure that
students are able to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate
information and communicate significant knowledge and
                  understanding.

The Culminating Portfolio

Students who graduate from Dallastown Area High School are required to maintain and present an online portfolio to meet the Pennsylvania requirement of the culminating project.  Many of the items that are to be included in the portfolio are created as a part of each student's normal coursework.  One project in the portfolio will be an extended or self-directed project.  Please follow the portfolio guidebook link for a detailed explanation of the portfolio requirements:

In this video you are told that you do not need to type in an Enrollment Key, but you should probably go ahead and type in a password [or Enrollment Key] to limit access to your portfolio.

Checklist of Career Planning Activities is a working document in Microsoft Word that will allow the user to check off boxes as those activities are completed.  Students will find this file helpful as they explore all avenues of career learning.

The activities in this document are designed for students who move into Dallastown during the school year and miss some of the activities required for the portfolio or for students who miss a specific portfolio activity.  These activities may only be substituted for the regular portfolio activities with the consent of the student’s advisor:  Alternate Portfolio Activities.

Documents to Assist with Teaching Projects

If you are interested in doing a project related to teaching or education, the following links will provide you with additional assistance since a project in teaching has some special requirements.  The MS Word form of the Lesson Plan Template can be downloaded and saved as a Word document and then used to create the ten or more lessons that are required for a teaching project.  The next two documents, which are in Adobe Acrobat, may also be useful.  These documents explain the additional rubric which the host teacher is to use to evaluate your perfomance in his or her classroom.  The Rubric Cover Page is how the rubric is explained to the host teacher.  The Teaching Rubric has the specific scoring areas which will be important to you.

The Alternate Project / Portfolio

Any student who enters Dallastown during his or her senior year and does not have a record of having completed a culminating project at the prior school may elect to complete the Alternate Portfolio or the senior year requirements for the regular Culminating Portfolio.  A copy of the guidelines for the Alternate Portfolio can be found by clicking on this link:  Alternate Portfolio.
