Overall Middle School Math Standards
 
Students will demonstrate problem solving skills as they
  • Utilize a variety of techniques
  • Demonstrate appropriate mathematical operations
  • Apply mathematical ideas to common and complex problems
  • Use appropriate technology, i.e. calculators and computers
  • Communicate the processes used to arrive at solutions
  • Apply mathematical knowledge to real world situations
  • Incorporate mental math and estimation skills
  • Use math specific terminology and notation
  • Reason mathematically
  • Gain confidence in math ability
Number concepts and computational skills developed in the elementary and intermediate schools are reinforced and extended in grades 7 and 8.  In addition, new concepts are developed at each grade level.  Key focus topics for each grade are listed below:
  • Grade 7: Expressions and equations, scientific calculator, statistics, Pythagorean theorem
  • Grade 8: Data analysis, equations with rational numbers, Algebra
