“Music gives us soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” PlatoWELCOME TO MUSIC CLASSES ATORE VALLEY ELEMENTARY![]()
GENERAL MUSIC: Once a week, the children have an opportunity to discover melody, form, harmony, style, rhythm and expression through singing a diverse array of songs, playing numerous instruments, moving, notating, listening, dramatizing and creating. Here are a few of our activities:
In Kindergarten, we sing with the use of Curwen hand signs, invent accompaniments on classroom instruments, link music with language literacy, and develop a repetoire of traditional songs and dances.
In First Grade, we move, move, move! We use scarves to define expression in music, create dances to embellish a composition, or add instrumental accompaniments to literature.
In Second Grade, we begin to recognize inspirational stories of famous composers, learn to work cooperatively in small groups, discover the language of notation, and create hand jives.
In Third Grade, we discover the joy and trials of playing a recorder, delve into the study of instruments of the orchestra and band, and compose individual music pieces. In the spring, all 3rd graders are involved in a grade-wide musical.
![]() ORCHESTRA:
The opportunity for String instruction begins in grade 3. Students meet once a week in small groups for twenty-five minutes with: Mr. Diehl (cello and string bass)
Mrs. Moul (violin and viola)
Orchestra members not only gain the self-satisfaction of being able to play a musical instrument, but also work toward the opportunity to share their accomplishments in a group setting.
