March 26, 2020 Update

Dear Wildcat Families,

Good evening! The purpose of this message is to provide an update for our families in the district regarding engagement and learning opportunities that the dedicated faculty and administration at Dallastown Area School District have planned and coordinated for our students.

As we continue our mandated closure, DASD has designed a phased framework for learning from a distance so that our students can remain engaged and learning can continue in a purposeful and relevant way during this time of isolation. This framework will be implemented in phases as it facilitates a strategic and balanced approach to distance education.  This is the first time DASD has embarked on distance learning to this scale and scope…  we appreciate your continued patience, understanding, and support as we implement this unique and fluid initiative.

IMPLEMENTING THE FRAMEWORK:  Phases and Descriptions:

Week of March 30, 2020

PHASE I - Optional Participation: DASD Distance Learning Menu/Enrichment

Optional activity menus will be posted on the DASD Distance Learning Framework website for families and students to access menus of activities to self-select from to support student exploration in an array of curricular connected areas based on grade levels and/or departments/courses (Menu format: PDF).

Later date to be determined

PHASE II:  DASD Flexible Instructional Day(s) (FID)

Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs) are an alternate form of instruction in place of a day otherwise canceled. DASD has been approved to use FIDs from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and these days will be considered days of school. On a FID, students will complete learning assignments provided by their teacher at home to support the continuation of learning activities in a variety of ways designed by the grade-level and/or subject-level team, which may include the use of a multitude of online learning tools and/or offline activities. Students will have the opportunity to engage in subject area content that would have originally taken place during a regular school day. Additional enrichment resources and optional activities may also be provided for exploration.

How to Access DASD Distance Learning:

DASD has developed a website to house all of the learning opportunities throughout these phases. Phase I learning menus will be posted on Monday, March 30, 2020, and the link to this site will be sent to you by district email and will be posted on the district website. For families in need of paper copies of the learning menus for Phase I, a plastic bin will be placed outside (outdoors) the main entrance to each school building by grade levels and/or departments/courses.

High School Only: Due to the complex nature of the high school course structure, please contact the district switchboard to request a packet of high school materials by phone at 717-244-4021 or email

Communications regarding DASD Distance Learning:

On March 30, 2020, several informational communications will be sent as Phase I of the Distance Learning Framework site is launched. You can expect to receive communication from the district, your child(s) building(s), as well as teacher communication(s).  Details for accessing Phase II of the Framework will be communicated later that week.

The faculty and staff of DASD look forward to engaging with our families and students through these enrichment activities and opportunities. As we unfold each phase of the DASD Distance Learning Framework, and as the pandemic crisis continues to evolve, we will provide you with updates as appropriate through School Messenger, our website, and social media. And, if they have not already, students will soon begin receiving communication from their classroom teachers.

Thank you for all you are doing and will continue to do, to keep your family and our community safe and strong.

Erin M. Heffler, Ed.D. Assistant Superintendent
